Sunderland is still sustaining its reputation for inward investment. The city is home to Nissan the largest car plant in the UK and one of the most productive in Europe.
Sunderland has a strong manufacturing tradition, with a high representation of employment in the sector.
There is now a transition underway from light engineering to advanced manufacturing, with the emphasis increasingly upon the design and manufacture of low volume, high added value products.
Success in the industry is demonstrated through the number of large companies located in the city, within the automotive and aerospace sectors. There is also high growth small enterprises emerging out of incubator centres such as the Business & Innovation Centre.
